The National Library of New Zealand doesn't like it when you download their photos. They have them in high resolution on their website, but they make it hard for you to get your hands onto them. I've been asked to document how to get the high resolution files. Here we go:

  1. Go to the National Library photo search page and enter your search term.
  2. Find what you want to find and open the desired photo on its own page (right click on the photo you want, select 'open link/image in new tab' and go to that tab).
  3. Check for copyright issues; the main issues for old photos are the death year of the photographer and the year the photo was taken. Check PD-New Zealand for details.
  4. If it's all good, open 'See original record' in its own tab.
  5. You should now have a tab open that has a table with two columns (this sometimes doesn't work first time round; simply try again). The bottom line in the table is a link 'View archived copy online'; follow that link.
  6. You should now see that photo again (twice, in fact). There's a toolbar above the photos and the leftmost icon displays 'download' when you put the cursor over it. Initiate the download by clicking this button. Go to 7. unless you are using Apple OSX when you should go to item 1. below—
  7. You now need to manually rename the downloaded file. Give it a sensible file name, and you need to change the file extension from 'jp2' to 'jpg' (you may have to set your file explorer to show you file extensions).
  8. You now need a piece of software that helps you convert the file to a proper jpeg. I use XnView for that purpose (it's freeware), but I'm sure there are other packages that can do the trick. In XnView, open the renamed file and export (Ctrl+Alt+S) as jpeg.
  9. You now have a file ready for uploading.

(Mac) continuing from 6 above
  1. The image will open in Preview — click on the image to display Preview. Choose File, Export to give the new image a sensible file name. Do that and also change its format from JP2 to JPEG. Save it.
  2. You will now have a file ready (in Downloads) for uploading.

If you run into trouble, don't hesitate to leave queries here; I've got this page on my watchlist. I don't necessarily look at my Commons watchlist every day, so ping me on my Wikipedia talk page if you want a swift answer. Feel free to edit the above instructions if things need updating or to make the instructions clearer. Schwede66 18:05, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
