Rename proposal

[edit]

I think this category should be renamed to Category:Falkirk council area to match schemas for similar councils, e.g. Category:Stirling council area. This is because (a) we currently do not have a category for the town of Falkirk; moving this one would free up this category for that purpose and (b) the naming scheme of subcategories is currently inconsistent. I think the only external impact would be on {{Council areas of Scotland}}, a simple rename. Rodhullandemu (talk) 14:05, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I support consistency, whichever solution is popular. The lack of consistent naming is immensely confusing and creates unnecessary work for volunteers who have to undo the 'mistakes' of other contributors who are bound to add categories without spending a long time trying to bend their mind around the odd structures we have. If authority/council areas are consistently done across the UK, we might even have a chance of a consistent approach on Wikidata... -- (talk) 14:29, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This definitely gets my support, it would be nice to have each council area in Scotland as a second level category (under Scotland) with consistent sub categories for each area. I've been working on trying to categorise everything that's in Category:Angus into appropriate sub categories but there are so many duplicate and confusingly named categories. We have Category:Inns in Angus alongside Category:Pubs in Angus. It's all too easy to find you're categorising something into, say, a UK or a Scotland level category only to find a council level category exists for another area and you find yourself going back, creating a category and re-categorising work.
I'd really like to agree to a series of categories that are created, and even if they sit empty for a while, they're present, ready to be used and there's no confusion about where things go.
The first step is clearly to make sure there are clearly defined categories for each council area under which everything else should reside, and creating Category:Falkirk council area is the first step to ensuring we have a simple, coherent categorisation system. Thanks, I agree, as far as the UK goes I think there is now no longer any practical distinction between and Inn and a Pub, since some pubs offer Bed & Breakfast, and some Inns do not provide any accommodation at all. Eventually I would like to see this structure merged into a "Pubs in" structure, and any that offer significant accommodation could also be categorised by "Hotels in"; but that's a discussion for a later date, perhaps.
