In addition to English:

  • Amharic is the national language of Ethiopia
  • French is one of the official languages of the Comoros. In addition, several of the passengers came from Francophone countries, and the aircraft was bound for Brazzaville and Abidjan. During the incident, the hijackers actually gave instructions in French as well as Amharic and English
  • Arabic is one of the official languages of the Comoros
  • Swahili is a major language of Kenya (the aircraft was on an Addis Ababa-Nairobi leg)
