Rename proposal

[edit]

I propose we ditch this category entirely and more all the files out into the disused stations by country categories. The make these sub cats to the stations by countries cats. Railwayfan2005 (talk) 16:35, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose to rename Disused → abandoned. Many defunct train stations are not abandoned at all but have a new function. "Abandoned train stations" (as well as "Former train stations") can be a subcategory of "Disused train stations". --ŠJů (talk) 14:24, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

But, if they are not abandoned, can we assume they are in use (for another purpose than the one they were created for?) Esby (talk) 21:18, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. As regards a station building, if it is disused as a train station, it can be either abandoned or used for a new function. And the abandoned can be either demolished or remained (as a ruin etc.). I think, "abandoned" is not a suitable word for such station which is disused as station but used for another function. --ŠJů (talk) 21:27, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The category "Disused train stations" should have subcategories "Former train stations" (for such buildings which have a new function) and "Abandoned train stations" (for such which have not). If we will have "Ruins of train stations", it should belong into "Abandoned train stations". "Demolished train stations" can be a third subcategory of "Disused train stations" or belong into "Abandoned...". --ŠJů (talk) 21:34, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agree to merge into one single category (Category:Former train stations, on the model of Category:Former railway lines). If "Former" and "Abandoned" are subcategories of "Disused", I'm afraid that dealing with them by country and regions/departments may be tidyous for most of uploaders : the difference is too subtile. A railway station is either in function (active) or not. Jack ma (talk) 07:12, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See Category:Former train stations in France. Jack ma (talk) 08:15, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We should consider what solution is compatible with the category structure, especially with the definition of Category:Buildings by former function. I think, "disused" is more suitable term which can cover both case types. "Abandoned" is not unambiguous in meaning "abandoned by railway traffic". And how to treat the relation to destroyed (not longer existing) stations? Can they remain a subcategory of "disused"? --ŠJů (talk) 16:11, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unsure I don't know what to prefer. To me, one bigger problem is that frequently one category is missing in one particular country, with the result that people get confused and images get wrongly categorized. Category:Disused train stations in France is nearly totally disused, and with the absence of exlanatory blurbs there, who will understand? For Spain on the other hand, Category:Disused train stations in Spain is the preferred one, with Category:Former train stations in Spain being nonexistant. And Category:Former train stations in France isn't in Category:Disused train stations in France either, leading to more confusion. - Olybrius (talk) 16:54, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
