Renaming to Category:Fires
[edit]W like wiki proposed moving this category to Category:Fires. However, that category already exists and is a grandparent of this one:
A conflagration is a type of fire that is large and destructive. We could move this to Category:Conflagrations (to make it plural). — hike395 (talk) 06:35, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, first ist was not a grandparent, it was only part of Category:Fire by type.
- Generally: “Conflagrations” are commonly named “fires” (for example the Great Fire of Pittsburgh, the Great Seattle Fire, Oil well fires, Farm fires, Building fires, ...)
- Problem: Where to sort e.g. Bonfires, Camp fires, Natural fire? All are fires but not in the sense of Category:Fires as Incidents or Disasters.
- Current handling: To consider this difference the current handling in commons is that there are e.g. (Fire by type & Fires by type) or (Fire by country & Fires by country) – so Fires (conflagrations) are Incidents and disasters and only one type of fire.
- It is consistent but also a bit confusing, as this discussion shows. It is also confusing because it means that for example Traditional bonfires of England is wrongly sorted under Fires in England because it should be under category Fire in England.
- IMHO there are two possibilities:
- 1) We keep it like it is: We are using “fires” instead of “conflagrations”. So that means that Category:Conflagration should redirects to Category:Fires. And maybe rename Category:Fires to Category:Fires (conflagrations).
- 2) We are starting to use “conflagrations” instead of “fires”. This is probably less confusing but that involves a lot of work to do: in this case all the categories like Fires by country, Fires by decade or Fires by century AND its subcategories must be renamed to Conflagrations by country, Conflagrations by decade and Conflagrations by century. One more reason to choose this solution is that the lemma of the Wikipedia article is “Conflagration”.
- Conclusion: The second solution is much more robust and also my preferred solution, but I don't think it can be implemented because there is too much work involved and because the other variant has already become established. Therefore, for pragmatic reasons, I have proposed the first solution (moving Category:Conflagration to Category:Fires). But English is not my mother tongue. - I think there's a language problem, so let us understand usage in English und Deutsch, and then we can figure out what is the right thing to do.
- There are two separate concepts being confused: there is fire as a "substance" (Stoff? Substanz?), and fire as an "event" (Ereignis). In English, the singular "fire" can be used for either the substance or event. But "fires" is very rarely used for substance. In 2006, Harej created Category:Fire to hold both der Stoff und das Ereignis, while Category:Fires became a sub-category that only holds Ereignis.
- Ich hab' wenig Deutsch, aber ich glaube, daß Brandsubstanz "Feuer" und ein Brandereignis "Brand" ist. Is das richtig? Die Verwendung des Plurals für Brandereignisse muß im Deutschen verwirrend sein.
- A conflagration (Feuersbrunst?) in English is a large or destructive fire event. Not all fire events are conflagrations. Eine bessere Übersetzung von "conflagration" könnte "Großbrand" sein.
