These images satisfy three criteria: They are Commons featured pictures. They are fairly large They have an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 5:4 They are therefore likely to be good desktop backgrounds (wallpaper). To check aspect ratio, go to the properties of the image, and then divide its height by its width. If the resulting number is 0.75 or 0.8, then it's the ratio we want. Anything between 0.73 and 0.82 is tolerable. To put an image in this category, add {{Wallpaper}} to its description page if it is featured on Commons. See also: Widescreen desktop backgrounds

Adding cutting coordinates to fit aspect ratio

When one of my images was tagged as desktop background image I learned about this effort. For a long time I was thinking about how I could use my own WikiMedia images on different screen sizes as desktop backgrounds for myself. My idea was, to add certain properties to the images that store cropping coordinates for each image in question that leads to the required screen size. I'm not really settled down with this but I now take the chance to discuss this idea here: Do you think that it makes sense to define tags like desktop_background_4x3, desktop_background_5x4, desktop_background_16x9 (this are screen ratios I'm working with, feel free to add more, but I would not use more than about five). Each tag accepts four integer numbers featuring top left (x_1, y1) and bottom right coordinates (x_2, y_2) (alternatively top left (x,y) and width height (w,h)). The idea is that you could write a script, downloading an image and cropping it to fit exactly your screen automatically once images are tagged this way. The result is in most cases much better than simply stretching the image to the right coordinates or cropping at random. The tagging can be done by each WikiMedian who thinks he has a good taste to crop an image reasonable to look good in the target ratio. What do you think about this kind of tagging images? • I think it should be just Commons pictures, most of the wikipedias have low quality standards and feature a picture based on its encyclopedic value, not its aesthetic value. The english wikipedia already has its own featured desktop backgrounds, it doesn't need to be repeated here. --Digon3 ^talk 21:42, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Bot?

I have made an automated Wikimedia image gallery download script for the iMacros browser addon. It is available on Gist. The script includes a 3-second timer so that the bot does not overwhelm Wiki servers. However, it would be preferable if a compressed archive (e.g., ZIP) file was made available containing all current backgrounds. I am new to Wikimedia, so could someone point me in the right direction? I would be happy to upload the ZIP file myself.
