Please note that no modern artillery is to be placed in any subcategory of this
[edit]Pinging Geo Swan and DarwIn, who I recently noticed to be breaking this long-standing agreement. Ain92 (talk) 11:48, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Ain92 With which image specifically? And what would be "modern artillery", BTW? The Modern Era started in 1453. Darwin Ahoy! 12:57, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
- Well, quite a few; these two, for example: File:Peça de Artilharia Schneider Canet 7, 5 cm. TR, mod. 1904, Museu Militar de Lisboa - Image 207479.jpg and File:75mm Pack Howitzer (USA) (10466707824).jpg (the latter one is not even a cannon in sensu lato, howitzers were distinguished even in the ML smoothbore era). I may have also missed some.
- Any kind of artillery with Category:Recoil and counter-recoil mechanisms running along the barrel, like the above, would be considered modern now, and they are visually very easy to distinguish from the non-quick-firing artillery of the previous era.
- Rifled breech-loaders of the 2nd half of the 19th century (and very early 1900s) like the Category:9 cm Kanone C/73, as well as transitional, so-called accelerated-fire (rarely also called semi-QF) artillery pieces with a counter-recoil mechanism in the carriage trail like the Category:Cañon de 75 de 22 calibres Sistema Canet should also theoretically be excluded but I personally am willing to tolerate them because they may be difficult to distinguish from the older ML guns at certain angles or on poor-quality photos, when the breech is not visible enough.
- There is also a class of rifled muzzleloaders like the Category:RML 16 pounder 12 cwt Gun, which this category description suggests not to be placed in "Cannons", but I personally would argue that they should be because unless the gun is identified or its muzzle is visible very well, it's practically impossible to determine whether it is smoothbore or rifled from a photo. - @Ain92 Thank you for the explanations, which all make sense. I'll try to notice those details in the future, and categorize those objects as "artillery" instead. Darwin Ahoy! 16:08, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
- Glad to help you! Thinking now whether I should change the category description regarding the rifled muzzleloaders. Perhaps, will do if noones else comments on this topic in some time. Ain92 (talk) 12:24, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
