Merging categories ?

[edit]

I think that Category:Brandy should be deleted and merged into Category:Distilled beverages, because they are synonymous to me, aren't they ? Unless there is in "brandy" some additional subtile notion (e.g. aging in wooden barrels, ...), I don't know. If no objection, they will be merged. Jack ma (talk) 12:44, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Difficult. Brandy is made of wine. If you define wine as the result of fermentation of grapes, then Brandy covers only 30 % of the distilled beverages. If you define wine as the result of fermentation of fruits, then Brandy is getting closer to distilled beverages. If you accept wine as being made from fruits, malt, corn, sugar, potatoes, vegetables (agave), then Brandy is almost identical to distilled beverages (with the exception of wines made of industrial sugar as done for many low cost drinks such as cheap pastis, gin, ...). Anyway, brandy needs to be maintained as it the global name and has many associated categories.
What's funny with Cognac/armagnac : they are the noble brandies while in Commons they are below the brandies, as champagne should be below sparkling wine ... --Foroa (talk) 13:41, 3 November 2009 (UTC)--Foroa (talk) 13:41, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you. Let's leave brandy as is. Yes, Cognac and Armagnac are brandies, and Champagne is sparkling wine (funny name, but true ;-). And "brandy" is to "distilled beverage" like "wine" is to "fermented beverage": the difference is grapes. Regards, Jack ma (talk) 14:47, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
