Regarding suggested page move "Birds of Australasia" seems specific enough. Snowmanradio (talk) 12:31, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Several categories with erroneous geographic names

[edit]

The name of this category is incorrect for its intended geographic scope. Australasia isn't a portmanteau of Australia and Asia (as it's currently being misused here), but rather a term coined to essentially mean "south of Asia" - it doesn't include Asia, or even all of Oceania, but rather just Australia, New Zealand, and typically (at least part of) Melanesia. As for what a category with this category's intended scope should be called instead, "Category:Birds of the Asia-Pacific region" (which is usually understood as South, East, and Southeast Asia and the Russian Far East + Oceania) is probably the best option; if not that, then "Category:Birds of Asia and Oceania" could work. Either one would be better than perpetuating the current erroneous name.

A couple of this category's constituent categories also have name errors and require renaming, namely Category:Birds of Australia-Pacific (which, judging by its intended scope, should take the name "Category:Birds of Oceania" from the next misnamed category) and Category:Birds of Oceania (which should be renamed "Category:Birds of the Pacific Islands" or something else along those lines, as Oceania includes Australia, which this category excludes).
