Sheikh Muhammed Eşref Efendi was born in Turkey. Being a direct descendant of advisors to the Ottoman Sultans, he and his siblings were raised by his parents in the Sunni tradition. The family moved to Berlin in 1967.

In 1995 he met the latest Grandsheikh of the Naqshbandi silsila, Grandsheikh Muhammed Nazim al Rabbani an Naqshbandi. He began to study Sheikh Nazim’s teachings and accepted him as his master and joined the Naqshbandiyya. The silsila of the Naqshbandi tradition can be traced back through all Grandsheikhs to Prophet Muhammed sav. Grandsheikh Nazim Al Rabbani (qs) is a descendant of the bloodline of Seyyidina Muhammed sav Himself. He has authorized Sheikh Eşref Efendi in 1994 to serve as a spiritual guide and advisor in the tradition of the Naqshbandi tariqa.

As it is custom in the tradition, Sheikh Eşref Efendi began delivering sohbets, lectures in Berlin and quickly a community of people gathered around him. In 1998 he took off to Bosnia with some of his students to offer reconstructing and humanitarian aid after the war in Bosnia. In a joint effort they helped with the reconstruction of the burial site of Baba Sari Saltuk, a 13th-century awliya saint.

Today he is still known as Sheikh Eşref Efendi and founder of the Sufi Centre Rabbaniyya the European Center for Sufism and Interfaith Encounters. His events and sohbets are visited by people from all over Europe, people of various cultures, traditions and beliefs. Due to the growing interest Sheikh Eşref Efendi’s influence has also spread to Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Slovenia and INDIA. Sheikh Eşref Efendi is frequently receiving invitations by various institutions and authorities to deliver speeches as a representative of Sufism and Islam due to his respectful attitude towards all religions, traditions and cultures.

Since May 2014 with the authority and spiritual support of the 41st Grand Master Mawlana Sheikh Mehmed Adil Al-Naqshibandi Al-Rabbani (qs), Sheikh Eşref Efendi travels as an ambassador and speaker at numerous international interreligious and world peace events, such as: World Peace Forum in Brasil (2016) and Jordan (2017, 13th Muslim International Forum in Helsinki, Finland (2017) and as recently 7th Luxemburg Peace Prize in EU Parliament (2018) On his “Sufi-Way To Peace Tour” in several countries and regions like Jordan, Palastine, Uzbekistan, Iran, India and now Kashmir he is spreading the spirit of peace in the tradition of the Seal of the Prophets Seyyidina Muhammed sav, his honourable companions and representatives of the Naqshbandiyya Alliya.

Sheikh Eşref is visiting regularly Turkey, Cyprus, Switzerland, Mekka and Medina in Saudi Arabia, Jerusalem and Palaestina, Bosnia Herzegowina and the Balkan Countries and India He was invited to conferences for Islam and World Peace to South Korea, Brazil, Romania, Italy, Jordan, Canada, Uzbekistan, Iran, Morocco, UK, France, Germany.
