The birthdate of "Leo Stevens" (an artificial name constructed by his mother and the acrobat to whom he had been indentured) is often rendered as 1877 because of this unfortunate experience he had in the summer of 1875. Although an actual paper record of his birth (in Cleveland?) has never been found, it most likely occurred in Sept 1871.
