Classification

[edit]

All the Akrotiri pictures amount to quite a few, over a few hundred I believe. Initially someone set up a few subcategories by museum, which I expanded. Now it turns out that classification by museum might not be the best way to do it. For example, you would have to distinguish not only the museum, say the National Museum of Athens, but the Akrotiri items in it, since it contains items from other sites as well. I think putting all the pictures under just Akrotiri would be a classificatory disaster: how could you find anything? However, the division by museum might not be the best. What would you think about a simple division by type of artifact, pottery, fresco, etc? And further possibly fresco by name? I'd be interested in any views on subclassification of the category. Some discussion has taken place on user talk pages but I would like to make sure all the interested editors get a chance to view the issue. To me this is important because I'm working on WP fresco articles, which I think will increase in number.Botteville (talk) 12:24, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This issue has developed into an issue. One of the admins want to put this back to a nearly uncategorized category. I say nearly because some subcats were there of a museum subdivision. As it turns out this museum classification splinters the fresco pics more than we would like to see them splintered and is not really appropriate because the museums contain artifacts from elsewhere. There also is an argument that you cannot prove the artifacts are in the museums. This is of less relevance, as you cannot prove any of these donated pictures are of Akrotiri artifacts. However, the museum categorization has presented logical difficulties, which are not unsolvable, but why should we do that when easier subclassifications might be established. I have suggested we re-subcategorize on a diffetent basis, by general type of artifact - fresco, pottery, excavation pics, etc. We are waiting to hear from the admin, whose only solution is to revert to unsubcategorized pics. If you have any input now is the time. If we do not hear in a few days I plan to go ahead with the resubcategorization on the grounds that Commons advises against too many pictures clogging up a category and suggests subcategorization in that case.Botteville (talk) 01:58, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Resubcategorized

[edit]

The pics in this cat have been resubcategorized following a discussion with one of the admins, who seemed to want to put all the fresco pictures together, instead of distributing them to different museums, which was at best a tricky classification. One had to create a category for every single museum and furthermore there was a question of where the original was. For myself I wanted to see all the pottery pictures together. The same problems applied. Some were in the museum, some on site, and no doubt some scattered around to a great many places. My apologies to whoever invented the museum concept of classification. I tried to expand it, but it did not seem to work out. If anyone has a different classification maybe you should bring it up. I'm feeling confident about the current classification, which is by type of artifact discovered at Akrotiri or related subject, such as the archaeologists. Got any more pics of them? I'd like to see some of these characters.

I hope more pics and more artifacts will be donated. If the subcat is not clear, just put them under "Akrotiri minoan site" and eventually they will get subcated. I'm relatively new to commons myself. This time I tried using some gadgets, which sure was a labor-saving device. I found cat-a-lot quick and easy to use if anyone is interested. It reminds me of vi under Unix and Framemaker and some of those oldies but goodies. Hotcat I did not like at all. It is too dangerous. Reminds me of the early word processors, which might cause you to lose hours if not days of work. One slip and there goes everyhing, but fortunately it can be reverted. Now, the old categories I marked for speedy deletion. If you think they might eventually be needed by all mean unmark them. Unless there is another issue I am going to move on. I will be glad to help or cooperate with you on any issue - send me a message - but, make sure your assistance is genuine assistance more in the line of customer service, which I think is what WP policy wants. I do apologize for this long section but I find it hard to communicate without talking, all you true-blue Laconians.Botteville (talk) 02:01, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
