Category talk:Aboriginal Australians

We seem to have a problem with this category and the "Indigenous Australians" category.

Aboriginal Australian is an ethnographic group/sociological race. It's directly analogous to "African American" or "Negro". Many Aboriginal Australians live abroad, many were born overseas, have no Australian citizenship and have never set foot in Australia, and this will surely become more common as time goes by. We can't legitimately place all media concerning Negroes in the Category "People of Africa" (clearly Lenny Henry or Eddie Murphy don't belong in that category)or place all media pertaining to African Americans in the category "History of the USA" (Marcia Hines doesn't obviously fall into such a category, nor does an image of a random image of African American child born in the last 12 months). For the same reasons we can't place all media pertaining to Aboriginal/Indigenous Australians into categories such as "People of Australia" or "Australian History". This woman, for example, would not have belonged in the category "People of Australia" 20 years ago, although she was still an Aboriginal Australian at that time. Similarly, if Deborah Mailman were to have a child next year, that child would be an Aboriginal Australian but would have no relevance to the "History of Australia" category.

Before we re-link those categories, I think we need to create sub-categories such as "Historical Media of Aboriginal Australians" or "Media of Aboriginal Australians in Australia". It's not logical to assume that every Aboriginal Australians must have been photographed in Australia at some time in the historical past. Such an assumption is also somewhat offensive.

Alternatively we can create a new category for "Indigenous Australian Citizens" or similar to clearly distinguish between the race/ethnicity category and the residency/citizenship category. The categories overlap, but they aren't the same thing. Mark Marathon (talk) 23:30, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
