Misnomer

[edit]

Not all of this is 8-bit, Pixel art Pixel art is a more fitting category name given that a lot of this art is 1-bit, 2-bit, etc. and that the main defining quality is the small resolution, and that it was drawn with pixels. A lot of the images have restricted color pallettes, but few of them are restricted to a specifically 8-bit pallette. If anything, 8-bit digital art should be a subcategory of pixel art.

Thanks for your input, and I can certainly understand that the current setup isn't a good solution. How large can pixel-art be? How can you know from looking at an image if it was drawn at the pixel level or some higher level and then the resolution lowered? It might make more sense to categorize 1-bit and 2-bit pixel art separately? - Themightyquill (talk) 08:50, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's pretty easy to tell when artwork is merely downsampled rather than handmade at a low size. Scaling algorithms have no sense of aesthetic ^_^ Anyway the definition can be subjective, but it should be clear -- which the current arrangement is not.

Can you propose a good definition? - Themightyquill (talk) 07:39, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The way I would structure the category tree (but not cement the names, those would need a little workshopping) is:
-digital art
--art at pixel scale
---art made for / on a particular architecture (not just colour depth but also palette, pixel shape, etc.)
----subcatted per architecture, and then per artist if we happen to have multiple pieces
---intentionally downsampled art
Where it becomes subjective is where provenance is missing/unclear. Then it's a matter of being bold, and making a good case for one's decision if contested. Arlo James Barnes 09:07, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Does the above work for you? - Themightyquill (talk) 18:31, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Anything with pixel in the name instead of "8-bit" is better for the topmost category - Bibbelo
Can this move be proposed since there seems to be a good consensus here? I completely agree with the proposed category tree above. Even a 1000x1000 image is pixel art if created with the relevant techniques and aesthethic considerations. YuriNikolai (talk) 01:17, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely agree with this. Pixel art comes in many subcategories. --Mbrickn (talk) 04:07, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
