English: The Zaagschip (sawship) refers to a Haarlem legend in which a ship with a metal saw on its bow "sawed" through the harbor chain of Damyat, Egypt, thus allowing the army of the (5th?) crusade to conquer the town and deliver it from its muslim inhabitants in the name of the Christian faith in 1188. Haarlem celebrated its 500th anniversary of this heroic deed in 1688. Most, if not all, of this story was developed in Haarlem after the Protestant Reformation in the years 1581-1630. Most of the artefacts such as stained glass windows, paintings, model ships, published accounts and so on were developed in the same period. By 1688 it was already known that at least the date was wrong.
