English: Britain armed merchant ships in World War II to provide additional warships for duties such as convoy escort and stopping merchant ships suspected of aiding the enemy. They were Royal Navy warships with "HMS" designations, and not to be confused with armed merchant ship, which was not a warship but merely a merchant ship with some self-defence capability.
