W. S. L. Jewett
The only child of William Jewett (c.1789-1874, see entry) and Mary Lyon Jewett. In 1859, while working as a correspondent for Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, he gained notoriety during the trial of John Brown when he was expelled from Charleston (VA, now WV) because he was suspected of being a correspondent for the New York Tribune. His engravings and sketches appeared in Harper's Weekly and Leslie's from 1859 to 1876, under the signature W.S.L.J. or W.J.; he also produced at least twenty of the portraits in Harper's History of the Great Rebellion. When his parents died in 1874, he came into an estate of about $150,000. Just two years later, suffering from depression, Jewett died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home. Jewett also is known to have painted portraits as a young man (these were in collections of his descendants as of 1957). Reference
