William G. Schirmer (1810-1878) was the Coroner of New York County, New York from 1868 to 1870. He was born in Cassell, Germany in 1810. He studied medicine at Heidelberg University in Germany, under Professor Vigelius. He migrated to the United States about 1838. One of his patients was Mrs. William M. Tweed, and this brought him into direct contact with Boss Tweed, and secured him a nomination for the office of Coroner of New York City when Tammany Hall first gained control over the New York City government. He served as the Coroner of New York County, New York from 1868 to 1870. He died in 1878.
