The Westland Surveyors Monument, close to the Gateway to South Westland, was erected in 1968 at a trig station "42° 55′ 22″ S, 11H 23′ 02″ E" by the Westland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors. It commemorates the "early surveyors, in recognition of their contribution to the development of Westland." A memorial plaque to Leonard Holmes (1932–1995), FNZIS, is nearby.
