The word Qalat (first word of the Arabic name of the complex) indicates “fortress”. Indeed there seems to be walls all around it, so it could be defended. From the western wall one can – at the southern edge - see the nearby Deir Semaan, a collection of large lodgings and some other buildings for the visitors. Walking north and looking uphill there first is the baptistery, and later the cathedral complex. One can climb some stairs at some point, and be on front of the southern side of it.
