Er war von 1961 bis 1966 Bundesminister für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und von 1969 bis 1974 Bundesminister des Auswärtigen sowie Vizekanzler. Nach dem Rücktritt von Bundeskanzler Willy Brandt am 7. Mai 1974 führte Scheel daher neun Tage lang die Regierungsgeschäfte. Von 1974 bis 1979 war er der vierte Bundespräsident der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
English: Walter Scheel (8 July 1919 – 24 August 2016) was a German politician (FDP). He served as Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development from 1961 to 1966, Foreign Minister of Germany and Vice Chancellor from 1969 to 1974, acting Chancellor of Germany from 7 May to 16 May 1974 (following the resignation of Willy Brandt after the Guillaume Affair), and finally as President of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1974 to 1979.
