The Waitatapia Stream contributes to the Otaki Forks.
From Otaki Forks the Waitewaewae Track leads to Papa Creek, a long part of it accompanied by an old bush tramway, and further to the YTYY hut.

Overview
The Otaki Stream system is by far the largest of the catchments within the Tararuas. The region known as Otaki Forks (aka The Forks) has as its focus the forks themselves: the junction of two large rivers (Otaki and Waiotauru) and, almost contiguously, the smaller Waitatapia Stream. This cross-shaped junction is seen from a small grassy flat beside the road, about 1 km beyond the Roaring Meg. It was to this flat that the timber and passengers from the mill on Sawmill Flat opposite were swung over on a wire cable. This site now displays a memorial cairn to the pioneers of the district.
