Contemporary Biographies, by W.T. Pike, including "Manchester & Salford at the opening of the Twentieth Century". (Pike's New Century Series no.2). Published in 1901 by W.T. Pike & Co., 19 Grand Parade, Brighton.

The volumes in this series each contain an illustrated section about the county, followed by a long list of short biographies (each with a photographic portrait) of men of the county who were alive in at the time of publication (plus a few who had recently died). Each volume has an index to the illustrations of buildings and views of the county, and an index to the biographies.

  • Flickr has copies of 38 illustrated pages from this volume here, uploaded by Manchester Archive.

Note: all photographs of original volumes in this category, which were uploaded by Storye Book, were taken with a handheld camera. The century-old pages in this rebound volume will not tolerate compression of its spine in the scanner. (The reprint, however, has been scanned).
