Vocational schools in Scarborough, Ontario have been the staple in education, offering as alternatives to regular collegiate institutes. After a 1961 study of the feasibility of establishing junior vocational schools for the students in Scarborough (following the openings of Cedarbrae and Midland secondary schools), the Scarborough Board of Education opened Bendale Vocational School in 1963 and had two successful clones serving other areas: Sir Robert L. Borden Secondary School in 1965 and Timothy Eaton Secondary School in 1971. With the less-academically challenged, differed to Bendale's, in 1965, Tabor Park Vocational School was established (Bendale was re-titled to Bendale Secondary School to avoid confusion) and opened two more schools in other areas such as Maplewood Vocational School in 1967 and Sir William Osler Vocational School in 1975.

In 1987, the board re-designated the titles "Secondary School" to "Business and Technical Institute" and "Vocational School" to "High School" to better reflect the designation.

In 1998, the Scarborough Board merged into the TDSB. As of January 2015, Only Bendale, Borden, Maplewood and Osler remains open. However, two schools were closed: Tabor Park in 1986 (and was renamed to SCAS, but the building is now leased to the Catholic school board) and Timothy Eaton in 2009 (though the building sat vacant and awaits demolition).
