Viral subgenomic messenger RNA (also subgenomic mRNA, or sgRNA) replication is the process of producing a so-called “nested set” of different, but partially identical mRNAs from the same piece of a genomic template strand in viruses with a genome that is present in the form of RNA (RNA viruses). Beginning at one end (the 3' end) and up to some point the resulting mRNAs are partially identical. This process is utilized e.g. by Nidoviruses to produce some of their proteins and gave them their name (lat. nido “nested”).
