The Vienna pattern of French-suited playing cards had emerged in Vienna by the late 1850s based on an earlier Lyon export pattern dating back to c. 1700. The pattern produced today by Piatnik originates in the Type A version which appeared in 1885 and was designed by Sürch and Neumayer. The Type A, also known as the "Vienna pattern, Large Crown" has crowns and headgear on the courts that are cut off by the card frame.

There are 5 types in all. Type D is also known as the Vienna pattern, Small Crown, which originated in a Neumayer design in 1881. Type E was a more naturalistic design by Zinke (1857) which continued to be printed until the mid-20th century.
