Vicolo Sterrato, or Salita di San Nicola da Tolentino, alley in Rome, demolished 1885
"VICOLO STERRATO The Via di San Nicola da Tolentino a street which leads from the Piazza Barberini at the foot of the Pincian and Quirinal Hills to the Strada Pia is crossed at right angles by the Vicolo Sterrato A part of the large Garden attached to the Palazzo Barberini is seen terraced up on the right hand and in it is placed an ancient colossal statue of Apollo seated under the celebrated pine known by the name of the family whose property it is and which is one of the two largest trees of its species now standing within the precincts of Rome This small unpaved filthy lane lined with neglected buildings and broken walls supporting terraces and ilex hedges ornamented with sculpture forms a curious contrast of poverty and magnificence but a contrast continually occurring within the walls and in the neighbourhood of Rome."
- George Vivian, Views from the gardens of Rome and Albano; drawn by Georg Vivian, and lithographed by J. D. Harding (London: Thomas McLean, 1848), 6-7.
