A steam engine is said to be "vertical" if its pistons and piston rods operate in the vertical plane. The engine is "inverted" if the engine cylinders are positioned above the crankshaft. The vast majority of triple expansion marine steam propeller engines were of the vertical inverted type, though such engines are often only identified as "vertical" in the literature.
