In ancient Rome, vernae (singular verna; both masculine and feminine in grammatical gender), were slaves born to a slave woman within a household (domus) or rural estate (villa) and reared within the familia. Freedpersons often identified themselves as vernae on their epitaphs, and vernae often held a more favored place within Rome's system of slavery.
