English: The VDA was established 1880 or 1881 in Vienna as German-Austrian Allgemeiner Deutscher Schulverein zur Erhaltung des Deutschtums im Ausland (DVA), kurz: "Deutscher Schulverein" (German for "General German School Association to the preservation of the Germanness abroad" (DVA), shortly "German School Association"). Self-declared aim of this organisation was "…the care of the connections of the Germans abroad to Germany and Austria, especially by German school teaching". In 1908, the name of the society was changed to Verein für das Deutschtum im Ausland (German for "Association for the Germanness abroad"), until to begin of 1933, as the legal form of the association was changed to a GmbH (the German form of a Company with limited liability). Therewith was also eliminated the term "Verein" in the name and the society name was changed to Volksbund für das Deutschtum im Ausland (German for "Peoples’ federation for the Germanness abroad"). Although from 1933 onwards this organization was closely related to the national socialist Hitlerjugend, the VDA was formally independing until to 1938. The VDA was outlawed officially by the Act No. 2 of the Allied Control Authority for the Allied Occupation Zones of Germany from 10 October 1945 (German: Kontrollratsgesetz Nr. 2).
