A variometer is an adjustable air core RF inductor consisting of two coils of wire one inside the other, connected in series, with one coil pivoted so it can turn with respect to the other. When the axis of the two coils is parallel with the magnetic fields in the same direction, they add and the inductance of the device is maximum. When the movable coil is rotated so the magnetic field axes are not parallel, the inductance is reduced. When the movable coil is rotated 180° so the magnetic fields are in opposite directions, they cancel each other, so the inductance is small or zero.

A variocoupler is similarly constructed with two coils of wire, but the coils are not connected to each other but to separate circuits. So the device functions as an air core RF transformer with variable coupling.
