The US Army's Utility Tactical Transport Company (UTTCO), equipped with HU-1As deployed to South Vietnam in late 1962 to act as armed escorts to the existing H-21 Shawnee and H-34 Choctaw troop carriers. In November 1963 the UTTCO received 11 HU-1Bs. In August 1964 the UTTCO was redesignated 68th Armed Helicopter Company. In March 1965 it was redesignated 197th Aviation Company (Armed Helicopter).
