The Weekly Mail, Saturday, February 11, 1899. Shipping News: TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE OF THE STEAMER TURRET AGE. A St. John's, Newfoundland, correspondent writes on January 20:-On Tuesday, January 17 the steamer Turret Age, of Newcastle-on-Tyne (Captain Brady), put in here badly damaged. She was on a voyage from Havre, via Cardiff, to New York, with part general cargo and met the same terrible storms which swept, the Atlantic during the last fortnight of December, and drove nearly a score of earners in here for repairs or coal. She met a hurricane, and was badly tossed about for a week or more, her plates becoming strained in the battering which the seas gave her. Her bows began to leak, and the forehold gradually filled with water. For fourteen days she made only 700 miles, and at times was entirely unmanageable. The water in the fore compartment gradually increased till it contained 16ft and she was down by the head so much she that fears were entertained by the crew that would never live through the storms which continued to scourge her. The whole dependenc lay in the forward bulkhead, which stood the strain it splendidly; had it given way the ship must inevitably have gone down within a few hours, and she would probably have been lost also, as it was too rough for ten days for any boat to live. She was headed for this port when the storms abated, and reached it in safety. When docked it was found that she had several holes in her bottom, that many of her plates were damaged and that much of her forward part under the water need to be re-rivetted. At the present writing a representative of the underwriters is on the way from New York to decide upon the character of the repairs to be made.[1]

1901 sold to Firth S.S. Co. Ltd. (A. Tate & Co.), Newcastle renamed FIRTH OF FORTH. 25.7.1903 foundered 25nm off Cape Bengut whilst on passage from Hamburg to Vladivostock with general cargo.
