Early in the 20th Century Toronto had an even more extensive network of streetcars than it does today. One of the routes was known as the "Belt Line". Streetcars ran in both directions on a rectangular route that circled downtown.
In the 1970s the TTC occasionally ran heritage vehicles downtown, aimed at tourists, on a route inspired by the old belt-line, which were also labeled "belt line".
