English: According to ancient tradition, Homer's mother came from the island of Ios. She was supposedly buried in the mountains of the northeastern tip of the island, and its famous son, also. This is very questionable however, if not completely impossible. At the foundations of the monastery of Agia Theodoti, off the east coast of the island of Ios, they found a plaque with an inscription which uses a local version of the ancient calendar, which cites a "Homer month." It is on display at the Archaeological Museum of Ios, in Chora.
