Thondanur, also spelled Thonnur or Tonnur, is now a small village in Mandya district of Karnataka. It was the second capital of the Hoysalas and a major town before the 14th-century CE. It is an important heritage site for South Indian Vaishnavas as Ramanuja stayed here and pursued his studies on Hindu philosophy when there was strife in the Chola kingdom. To the west of the village is a large man-made lake (Thondanur sagara, Tonnur lake, Moti Talav), fed in part by a Hoysala infrastructure project that diverted and collected the waters of Yadavanadi and local springs. It is home to the ruins of four major Hindu temples, and one Islamic dargah of Sayyad Salar Masud built in part with pillars from nearby demolished Hindu temples.
