The theatre in Petra is situated at the south side of the Wadi Musa, along the side of the Outer Siq. It was built between 4 BC and 27 AD under King Aretas IV, and not, as earlier was presumed, in Roman times. During part of the first century it lacked importance, but after 106 was again in use. Its architecture is partly Nabataean, partly Roman with Hellenistic influences. Near the theatre there are graves, some are in the Theatre Necropolis, a continuation of tombs in the Street of Facades.
