English: John Gibson was among the first neo-classical sculptors to paint his sculptures. During the 19th century it became widely known that this had been the practice in ancient Greece. Gibson's intention had been to revive this practice of 'sculptural polychromy'. Venus holds an apple, the award bestowed upon her by the shepherd Paris for her beauty. It is a fruit often associated in art with carnal love, but Gibson has called his statue Venus Verticordia - 'the turner of hearts'. The Romans venerated Venus Verticordia on April 1st as a goddess of chastity. At the statue's feet, almost hidden by her drapery, is a tortoise (see also Aphrodite Urania).
