English: Lake Kerkini is located in northern Greece near the Bulgarian border. It was created by damming the River Strymon; however, prior to the lake was an extensive marsh favored by migrating birds. The birds are even more attracted by the lake; hence a Natura 2000 protected area was created for them, Techniti Limni Kerkinis - Oros Krousia ("Artificial Lake Kerkini - Mount Krousia.") The Krousia Range is on the southwest shore of the lake. The lake is fed by dozens of streams besides the Strymon, few of which appear on most maps. The Kerkinitis River drains the Krousia Range into the lake.
