Thomas and James Holroyd were brothers working as photographers in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England, until James died in 1874. However it was James who did most of the photography, while Thomas concentrated on his painting career. Although some sources suggest that this photography studio flourished in the 1860s and 1870s, many of the sitters are wearing 1850s styles, which suggests that the studio opened for business at least by 1855. Harrogate was in that era a spa town which attracted many tourists, so many of the sitters are visitors - some from America and Europe.

Note the carved oak furniture used as studio props. This is likely to be the collection of old oak carved furniture which Thomas Holroyd brought back from the Continent (Europe) for the studio, and left to Harrogate Corporation in 1904 as the nucleus of a proposed new art gallery (as formally agreed by the Council). The whereabouts of this bequest is today unknown.
