There were two distinct tapes sold as TDK SD. The first TDK SD, marketed in 1970s, was the company's first microferric (type I) tape, placed above the basic D/Maverick ferrics. The second, in late 1980s and 1990s, was an entry-level type II (ferricobalt) for North American market (equivalent, but not necessarily the same, cassettes were TDK SR in Japan and TDK SF in Europe).
