The bridge between Brunswick and Toxteth Docks was originally an asymmetric swing bridge, i.e pivoted at its east end rather than in its centre. When the bridge was opened, its shorter arm swung into this quadrant-shaped area. The construction of the new bridge doesn't make it clear where the pivot was exactly sited.
