It was operated as London Buses Route 218 until October 26, 1986. As part of Phase 1 of Surrey County Council's Bus Review, route 218 was renumbered to become route 458. This was to provide consecutive numbers over the Hersham - Kingston section, which is combined with route 459 (which was renumbered from route 471 at the same time) to provide a half-hourly frequency. However, the long-standing route number of 218 was lost with the changes. A new Sunday service was introduced on a six-month trial basis. The changes came into effect on 28 August 2010, therefore route 218's last day was 27 August 2010.
