Steam engines of a configuration that does not require a to guide the piston rod.
The first of these were beam engines, either single-acting atmospheric engines of the Newcomen type or the later engines using Watt's parallel linkage.
The most important crosshead-less group though are the late high-speed steam engines, where the piston itself formed its own trunk guide, as later became so popular for internal combustion engines.
