Services in Woolton were first held in a cottage in Delph Lane in 1811 and a small chapel was erected in Much Woolton in 1834. Although the congregations were small St. James' Church was built in 1866, as a result of their generous contributions. It was very exclusive and from 1895 - 1931 was a circuit in its own right known as the Woolton Wesleyan Methodist Circuit. It transferred to the Grove Street Circuit in 1931. The church has grown as Woolton has expanded and serves an affluent area. link
