English: St. Mary's Priory was founded in the 12th or 13th century as a dependency of the Schottenkloster in Regensburg and served to recruit monks from the Irish homeland for the Schottenklöster in Germany. This relationship was later moved to Würzburg und continued until the 16th century. The priory was dissolved in 1541. (See Gwynn and Hadcock, Medieval Religious Houses Ireland, p. 107–108, Dagmar Ó Riain-Raedel, Irish Benedictine Monasteries on the Continent, second chapter of The Irish Benedictines: A History, p. 58–59, and Denis Power et al, Archaeological Inventory of County Cork, Vol. I – West Cork, p. 351.)
