English: The Augustine friars (OSA) came to Cork during the reign of Edward I, probably in the time between 1270 and 1300. The remainings of the medieval friary, commonly called Red Abbey, were occupied until the rebellion in 1641. The friars built a new church in 1780/1781 at St. Augustine's Lane. The modern church was built in 1942 with additions in 1972. (See Gwynn and Hadcock, Medieval Religious Houses in Ireland, p. 297–298, and History of OSA in Cork.)
