Springwell Colliery No 2
Springwell No. 1 and No. 2 were the first locomotives ordered from Robert Stephenson & Co. in 1824. Thus, they were ordered before those of the Stockton & Darlington, but were delayed in order to get the S&DR locomotives completed. Springwell No. 1 was delivered on 12 April 1826 at a cost of £550 and No. 2 on 26 April 1826 also for £550. They may later have transferred to Killingworth Colliery.
A photograph was taken around 1860, later reproduced in Samuel Smiles biography of Stephenson and captioned 'A Killingworth Locomotive'.
