English: The Songye people — an ethnic group of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), living in the Lomami Province along both sides of the Lualaba River.
  • In 1985 it was estimated that the Songye numbered between 150,000 and 217,000. The Songye are divided into sub-groupings that are under the governorship of a central chief known as the Yakitenge. More local governance is in the hands of chiefs known as Sultani Ya Muti.
  • Their economy is based on agriculture and pastoralism.
