Snake fences are fences constructed from rough wooden rails, without the use of nails or other metal fastenings. When farmers first cleared wooded land, wood was so plentiful these fences could be built from recently felled wood, on the spot, without nails. Pairs of posts were pounded into the ground in two parallel lines. Horizontal rails were overlapped between the vertical posts, resulting in a sturdy fence, that did not require any metal. Such fences would trace a zig-zag path, like that of a wriggling snake, hence the name "snake fence".
